OP WANDEL MET EUGEEN VAN MIEGHEM
A stroll through Belle Époque Antwerp
On the occasion of the publication of the new book by Erwin Joos, biographer and leading expert on Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875–1930), we are delighted to present the exhibition ‘Op wandel met Eugeen Van Mieghem’.
The book Hulstkamp naar Montevideostraat takes the reader on a historical walk through Antwerp during the Belle Époque. The route begins at the elegant Hulstkamp brasserie on De Keyserlei, continues along the lively quays and the world of the port, and leads to Eilandje and Montevideostraat, the neighbourhood where Van Mieghem grew up and which would leave a lasting mark on his work.
This same walk forms the starting point of our exhibition. Through a rare selection of drawings, pastels and paintings from private collections, we bring to life various places, figures and scenes from Van Mieghem’s Antwerp.
From the fashionable city to the working-class neighbourhoods along the Scheldt, ‘Op wandel met Eugeen Van Mieghem’invites you to discover Antwerp through the eyes of the artist.
