In a separate part of this auction, an important collection of cartoon drawings is offered for sale, notably a collection of original comics pages by the famous cartoonist Pom (Jozef Van Hove), of the series of comic albums ‘Piet Pienter en Bert Bibber’. In 2019 the 100th anniversary of Pom’s birth is celebrated and the auction takes place on the occasion of this anniversary. Two complete comic albums are up for auction, namely ‘Polarisatie-preparaat XX’ from 1975 and ‘De Barbier van Bombilla’ from 1960. The albums, about 50 drawn pages each, are estimated 25.000-30.000 € each. Next to the complete albums, about 50 original comic pages are offered separately, as are a series of sketches and drawings by Pom. In total 67 auction lots with comic book drawings will be up for sale.
In the main part of this auction we have high expectations of two paintings. A small canvas by James Ensor from 1876 is estimated with prudence at 15.000-25.000 €; a canvas by Jef Verheyen, titled ‘De Regenboog’ (The rainbow) at 10.000-15.000 €. Apart from Belgian artists, several international eyecatchers are up for auction, namely a landscape by the Chinese artist Ling Fengmian, for which a result between 80.000 and 100.000 € is expected, and a large canvas by the Uruguayan modernist José Pedro Costigliolo (10.000-15.000 €).
Other important artists from Belgian modern art going on sale, are Jules Schmalzigaug and Paul Joostens. A collection of drawings and pastels by the futurist Schmalzigaug is offered for sale, as is a large canvas by Joostens from 1938, titled ‘De zegekrans’ (Victory wreath). Also in this category: two watercolours by Leon Spilliaert and an etching heightened with watercolour by James Ensor. For a still life by Jean Brusselmans a result between 7000 and 10.000 € is expected.
In the category of post-war art, works by Guy Vandenbranden, Paul Van Hoeydonck and Gilbert Decock go on sale, as well as works by Octave Landuyt, Maurice Wyckaert, Pol Mara and Jan Dries. A collection of eight works by Wout Vercammen is up for auction, as is a collection of works by José de Guimaraes, especially a perspex console containing two snake sculptures by the artist. A beautiful canvas by Jo Delahaut from his earliest abstract period (8000-12.000 €) completes the section of post-war Belgian art.
There are several works worth discovering in the category of contemporary art in this auction. A fantastic work by Rinus Van de Velde from a series around Russian poet Vladimir Majakovski is estimated 15.000-20.000 €. Two large photographic works by the late Marc Lagrange go on sale, as well as five works by Fred Bervoets and a magnificent selfportrait by Sam Dillemans.
In the category of design finally, one piece is a true eye-catcher, namely the aluminium bookcase ‘RTW (reinventing the wheel)’ by Ron Arad, estimated 8.000-10.000 €. Other design pieces that go on sale are a pair of armchairs by Jindrich Halabala, a desk by Alfred Hendrickx and the iconic armchair by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller.
