Homage Marcel van Jole 05/12/19 - 20/12/19

‘The tendency by people to consider small things as important, has produced a great deal of value.’ (M v J)

A passionate pedagogue, collector, art critic, curator, author of monographs and cofounder of the     M HKA, professor Marcel van Jole has left his mark on the Belgian art world. Campo & Campo invites about thirty artists, in whose career professor van Jole has been closely involved, to pay homage to him as an exceptional, versatile and influential personality within the art world.

After his training as a mathematician, Van Jole got an early taste for modern and contemporary art. This led to visiting professorships Aesthetics and Art History at various American universities and international meetings with Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall and Ossip Zadkine, amongst others, in Belgium with René Magritte, Paul Delvaux and the generation of G58. Van Jole was a gifted writer and essayist. His monographs were published on Folon, Pol Mara, George Grard and Christian Silvain, amongst others.

As a curator he was the driving force behind Confrontaties 111 Hedendaagse Kunstenaars (België – Luxemburg), an exhibition travelling the world from 1993. But his greatest achievement as a curator was undoubtedly the development of the art collection of the airport in Zaventem into a marvelous and lively museum of mainly Belgian art. The collection of the airport was auctioned here at Campo & Campo in 2018, under massive interest of art collectors and the Belgian national press.

In 1985 Van Jole was a co-founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA). From that same year he was also active in the field of heritage, as a member of the board of directors of Europa Nostra, an association for the protection of European cultural heritage. He was also particularly influential at the political level as a fine arts advisor to Karel Poma, Minister of Culture.
