Fête surréaliste
Un clin d’oeil au surréalisme
à Anvers – Berchem
Exhibition
13.11.2024 – 20.12.2024
We show you the fun and sometimes even kinky side of Surrealism.
After Xavier Canonne’s phenomenal exhibition at Bozar and Marie Godet’s innovative perspective at the Mons museum, Campo & Campo also wanted to celebrate the centenary of Surrealism in 2024.
Our central figure is Marcel Mariën, the youngest member of the Surrealist movement, born in Antwerp in 1920. At the age of 15 he discovered the works of Magritte. This had a crucial impact on his life and the role he played in this artistic movement, of which he became the historian and archivist. His visual shocks, puns and well-crafted titles show, among other things, the humour in Marcel Mariën’s work.
He accepts no constraints. We have created a ‘cabardouche’-style room in the exhibition to display his most provocative collages, photos and objects.
These are works that a feminist might criticise, but not when the important role played by women surrealists is highlighted in the same exhibition.
Interest in Jane Graverol and Rachel baes has been growing for several years now. Several works by these artists are on show. A lesser-known artist, Olga Morano (1935-1999), is presented with a series of unique objects.
Quote by Marcel Mariën: ‘Olga Morano was for me the most beautiful manifestation of freedom, in love as in art’.
Other quotes by Marcel Mariën introduce the surrealist artists to visitors, including René Magritte, Félix Labisse, E.L.T. Mesens, Marc Eemans and Pol Bury.
